The Burn Working
Making a Feltmark
Wanting something usually comes with the urge to question it. Is it working? Do I believe I can have it? Each check invites a little doubt.
This working turns a desire into a mark you can’t question, then puts it out of sight, so the part of you that worries has nothing left to worry about.
Most sigil methods build the mark by spelling, taking letters apart until the meaning is hidden. A Feltmark skips the puzzle. It comes from the feeling beneath desire, drawn before the mind can get involved.
What you need
A small scrap of paper.
A pen.
A match or lit candle.
A fireproof dish. (Use fire safely)
Say it
Speak what you want aloud as one short sentence, present tense, as though it's already true.
I sleep deeply. The right room finds me. I finish the draft.
Say it three times. Let your voice settle into it by the third.
Feel it
Now let the sentence go and imagine it's already happened. Not the details, the feeling.
What it's like in your body to wake restored, to receive the thing you needed just in time.
Name it
Find one word for that feeling.
Hopeful. Done. Open. Grateful.
It doesn't need to be clever, only true. Say it three times.
Let it draw itself
Pick up the pen before you start thinking. Without planning or correcting, put down the shape that word feels like. It might be the word itself, a single line, a dot, or scribbles. Even something almost elegant, whatever comes out, careful or wild, is the mark. Don't question it.
Charge it
Look at the mark while the feeling is still close. Say the word once more, quietly. Breathe and keep looking until the shape stops being a shape and your focus goes narrow. That moment is the one you want.
Burn it
Right there, light a corner of the paper over the dish. Let it catch, set it down, and watch it go to ash.
Let it go
Don't keep the ash. Tip it into soil, running water, or the bin. Then go do something that takes your full attention. Read, go for a walk, cook something. Anything that takes your attention works.
If the desire comes back to mind later, don't fight it. Just turn toward something else. And when results arrive, notice how they come. Usually it isn't dramatic. It's the likeliest thing, tipped a little your way.
Make it yours
Fire is one way, but it’s not the only one.
Fold the mark into a book you won't open for a year. Tear it small and bury it. Draw with your eyes closed. Use a color that matches the feeling. If the working works your way, your way is the working.
