The Seeing Stone

A spell for those who wish to see.

Some wishes are about understanding. This one is about sight. Finding what’s been hidden, noticing what keeps slipping past, being visible to the people who are looking for you. The working takes one sitting and leaves you with a small stone that carries it from then on.

What you need

  • A candle.

  • Paper and a pen/pencil.

  • A small stone. Tiger’s eye works well, but any stone you’re drawn to will do.

  • A bell, or anything that rings.

  • A heatproof dish. (Never leave a flame unattended)

Light the candle

Let it be the main light in the room if you can.

Make the mark

Speak your wish to see aloud, three times. Imagine it already happening: the thing in view, plain as day. Find one word for that feeling and say it three times. Then let your hand draw the shape of it without thinking. This is a Feltmark. However it comes out is right.

Wrap the stone

Set the stone on the mark and fold the paper closed around it.

Give it to the flame

Set the bundle in the dish and light the paper from the candle. Watch it burn down until only ash and the stone remain.

Ring once

When the flame is out, ring the bell. The working is sealed.

Take the stone from the ashes

Let it cool fully first. It will be hot. Then lift it out, brush it clean, and hold it in your open palm. This is your seeing stone.

Use it

Keep it close whenever something needs to come into view. Hold it while searching for something lost. Carry it when you want your work to be noticed. Set it where you do your seeing: a desk, a bedside, a windowsill. When you need it, look at it, turn it in the light, or hold it to your eye.

Make it yours

Any flame, any stone, any sound. Scatter the ash outside or keep a pinch with the stone. Make a new stone for each new thing you wish to see. If it works your way, your way is the working.
